Coaster : A small mat for a bottle or glass.
Are you a coaster person? It’s one of those things that can start some
unexpectedly fierce debates at the most civilised of gatherings. Nothing like someone shouting “Don’t forget the coaster!” and startling you so much that you spill the whole drink all over yourself and the precious table you were supposed to be protecting.
Here at Punk Me Up the word coaster has a tendency to bring us out in hives… images of Abigail’s Party, hostess trolleys and dodgy cracker joke slogans immediately spring to mind.
It’s not that we don’t like to protect our tables, but a quick customer poll revealed that it’s much more in vogue, pinterest and instagram friendly to be creative with your furniture protection…
It turns out throughout history people been using all sorts of funny things to stop drinks from marking the table over the years.
- Shallow tray or dish made of wood
- Silver or silver plates
- Pieces of fabric
- Disposable, cardboard, punch-out beer mats
We’re not too keep on bits of papier-mâché or cardboard all over our house, but our favourite alternatives to coasters include:
– Saucers- A cute cup and saucer set does the same job in style
– Magazines – For those artsy magazines you like to keep around but rarely pick up
– An old book- I mean who doesn’t love that old book smell!
So you won’t find coasters to paint at Punk Me Up (maybe just a few), why not paint a mug instead?
