Tell us about how I Make Knots began.
I started IMK two years ago. I was making and selling items but wanted to launch the company by doing a workshop where I’d teach to friends + press for a bit of a buzz on social media. It was at drink shop + do, and 50 people turned up. It was so much fun to see people who had never knitted before make a wearable item, and be really proud! I decided to continue with workshops, making patterns and creating kits.
What’s your earliest memory of making knots?
My great-grandmother would sit and make lace and I’d watch her in awe! I’d be so jealous as I’d be knotting up some french knitting (a round loom- they were little wooden royal figures with crowns!) and she’d be whizzing away on yarn as fine as hair!
Do you have a studio? What’s it like?
I work from home, but have an uber cosy knotty set up. I have a wall of yarn, its a shelving unit 2.5M x 2M of varying types + fibres, and every size knitting needle and crochet hook you could imagine. My space is full of textures; throws, cushions, rugs, baskets, stitch samples, with lots of prints and a little cockatiel who keeps me company whilst I work on knots.
What’s on your to do list?
Putting together new kits with our suppliers for the Autumn + Winter workshops, trying out a new yarn by Manuosh and a mermaids tail blanket for a friend!
Best thing about your knotting?
The best bit is its all gigantic! I love the big stuff! And the yarns are super fluffy- like being wrapped up in a cloud!
Pastels or fluorescent?
Thats a tough one. I’d have to go for fluorescents. I love brights!
The place you knit/crochet where no knitting or crocheting should be done…
Hmm, sometimes at work if its a slow Friday afternoon and my boss isn’t in!
What do you think about while you are knitting?
I find knitting really mindful- I tend to think less which helps after a super stressful day!
Did you daydream today? Tell us more…
I did! I was teaching a 1-2-1 at a venue and had a little day dream on the train home that I’d love to own that business.. its good to dream _ have goals!
Music? If so who?
I have an eclectic taste… My favourite all time band is Metallica (I know, I know, not a crafters first choice!) but then it has to be Fleetwood Mac and a bit of electro thrown in.
Who are you inspired by? Who should we follow?
Im currently loving jujujust on Instagram at the moment- her weaving and embroidery is amazing and so colourful. And I recently saw the Missioni exhibition at the Fashion Textiles Museum– so bright and lots of beautifully knitted items. Manuosh is great too for super gigantic makes!
The first of a series of monthly I Make Knots workshops will be running here at Punk Me Up next Tuesday 28th June. To book your space, and make your own knotty necklace in time for Summer then contact them directly, but be quick!
