In 2011, I had just graduated and I was feeling a little lost. I walked around East Dulwich with my CV, looking for something, anything, to fill my time and pay my rent whilst I thought about what I wanted to do. (A question that I always find difficult to answer- I’m 30 now and I still don’t think I know what I want to be when I grow up..)
I walked into a little ceramics cafe, handed in my CV, smiled at them and said “I’m free ANYTIME!” Little did I know that I would not only receive a phone call, but that I would walk into a job that I would end up in for eight years!
Whilst I’ve been working at Punk Me Up, my life has gone through many changes. I’ve lived in three different flats, completed an MA and even got married, but this little colourful corner has been a constant for me. As I’ve grown, I’ve also watched anxious first time parents become parents of two, even three children.
Now it’s time to say goodbye to Punk Me Up and start a new chapter in my life. After much deliberation, I’ve decided to jump head first into teaching and begin my PGCE in September (you don’t have to tell me, I know I’m mad!) As I think about leaving, I have come up with a quick list of things I will miss and things I won’t miss –
I WON’T miss:
- The kiln in the summer
- Working on Saturdays
- The Christmas rush!
- Being covered in glaze and paint all the time
- Working out how to split the bill
- People not being a nice human
I WILL miss:
- The kiln in the winter
- The wonderful staff members
- Dancing around to music when I’m opening and closing the cafe
- Watching children progress from prints to painting on their own.
- The joy on someone’s face when they are proud of what they have painted
Goodbye’s are always hard, but it’s been important to me to make sure that I close this chapter of my life the best way I can, so I want to say a big THANK YOU to all the customers but most of all the amazing staff that make Punk Me Up such a magical, creative place to be! Oh yes, and remember, always BE A NICE HUMAN!
