Here at Punk Me Up we love getting our hands dirty! We know that taking a lump of clay and sculpting it into a cup, a pot or even a face is a great feeling, one that comes from deep down in our bellies. A feeling that Charlotte Mei, a renowned ceramicist, illustrator, and teacher knows all about.
Charlotte has been teaching adults here at the café for the last 18months with her Clay Club, she has also taught hand-building workshops and one off sessions to get the kids involved too and even designed the Clay Kids logo. We always look forward to Tuesdays when conversations frequently begin with “Charlotte I have an idea… ” and to what we’ll find left on the shelf after she’s gone!
In fact, one of those conversations led to us purchasing Clayarella (our wheel) from a far away land and what a journey it’s sent us on…
Elfreda, our artist in residence a.k.a The little girl who loves rainbows and the original Clay Kid, has been exploring hand building techniques with our team and learning how to throw. We’ve loved having her and her fellows at our Home Ed mini-course on Tuesday mornings.
The best way for your little Punk or Buttercup to become a Clay Kid is to book onto our Autumn course where we’ll teach the skills needed, week by week, for your little ones to grow their sculpting hands. They’ll learn all about hand-building techniques and how to throw pots in this 12 week course and we’ll glaze and fire everything on site. Sessions are on Tuesdays from 4 – 5.30 and include a delicious tea and cost £15.
If you’d like to try out Clay Kids then you can also pop in to the café during the summer holidays, drop in sessions will be running Monday to Friday 10 – 2, and Tuesdays are Meet the Wheel only. Have a look at our What’s On section and check out our Let’s Get Punky Summer Deal, where you’ll get to paint a £9 ceramic for free when you collect 4 stamps between now and September 4th.
What are you waiting for, there’s plenty to do and make…
