Hi, I’m Becky, I’m a cellist, storyteller, and co-Director of local community arts organisation Nimble Arts, and I can’t wait to start running story and music Nimble Tales sessions for 0-5s in this magical space, starting in the Autumn term, when I’ll be here every Tuesday at 11am from the 8th September onwards!
From an early age, (and to my cello teacher’s dismay) I was distracted from the serious pursuit of scales and studies, and instead spent much of my practice time instead making ridiculous sound effects and composing my own pieces (happiest day ever = learning how to make an authentic yawn sound using the C string and a high downwards glissando).
Hours were also wiled away as a child forcing my (admittedly slightly reluctant) little brother to help me narrate ridiculous made up stories and radio plays into our fisher price tape deck…
So it was probably inevitable that as an adult that I’d end up with a job that involved spending my days creating silly stories, peculiar cello sounds and many a troubled hour figuring out the perfect way to be making a hat that closely resembles a dinosaur, or how to best create an authentically tea-stained pirate treasure map… It’s a tough job, y’know, but well, someone’s gotta do it 😉
Whilst Nimble Arts holiday clubs have been running in East Dulwich for the past few years, this is the first term we’ll be bringing Nimble Tales from Nunhead and Peckham into East Dulwich, and it’s going to be great fun telling stories in this brilliantly eccentric space!
I’ll be here every Tuesday during term time at 11am, with a new story every week, ranging from feisty princesses to misunderstood dragons, featuring lots of puppets, songs, scarves, bubbles and, of course, those cello sound effects (and a bit of Bach, George Crumb and possibly some Haydn for good measure!).
Classes are interactive and suitable for children from babies to older toddlers. I’m a big believer that narrative and stories are important for even pre-verbal little people, who respond well to changes in vocal and emotional tone, plus who doesn’t love a bubble and a song? (And I think a few stories and a bit of a sing are good for parents and carers too!).
It’d be lovely to see you one Tuesday – booking in advance is encouraged, although if we’ve space, you’re welcome to drop in and see what’s going on!
